IoT for enterprise may sound like an entirely new concept, but it has existed in the industry for a long time. SCADA systems and M2M have been doing it, in philosophy, for decades now to solve some very industry specific pain points and that too in the form of a very specific solution.
Utilities were indeed the first to use remote monitoring technologies enabled by M2M. Smart meters have been around for several years now and have been serving the purpose with great efficiency. Having been the early adopters of M2M technologies, utilities have the most to gain from IoT technologies that promise to bring a lot more than just automated meter reading.
At SenseGrow, we have a use-case for how this can be achieved with existing infrastructure in the recent car models. It is always convenient to build an end-to-end solution by building each individual piece anew. New gateways, innovative uses of the OBD port with new OBD dongles have all been explored, but the barrier for entry is still the automobile manufacturer. There is still very little data being exposed at the OBD port and it will be a long while before new hardware can make it into the vehicle manufacturing process.
