Why do car companies need to think like software companies?

It is interesting that it took Nissan almost a month to respond to this flaw after it was first reported to them. For such a glaring flaw, any reputable software company would have released a fix in less time. Auto industry is notorious for it's long cycles and while they continue to operate like that, issues such as this would become more common. There is a reason waterfall methodology doesn't work very well for software development. With the grand visions of connected car and all the promises that IoT holds for this industry, it is imperative that car companies evolve to embrace new and faster ways of doing things.
