Flood Protection with IoT

Monitoring water levels is not a new area of application for IoT. It has been used to remotely monitor reservoirs and other water facilities for a while now. This, however, is a great example of using IoT in a real world situation with all the real world challenges. Battery life and theft are very common issues in any wide area deployment such as this one. Similar issues have plagued the farming industry where farmers are looking to deploy smart farming solutions in a large area to monitor the conditions. Spotty network coverages are also a major issue affecting the efficacy of such solutions. Nonetheless, it is very exciting to see citizens and local communities coming together to roll out these IoT sensor networks to not only help themselves but the entire community.

In some ways, this can be considered as a Smart City solution, born out of a need for flood protection rather than the need for some convenience.
